The latest year is still incomplete: offences are recorded after the fact, and a year's figures keep rising for several months. A fall in the latest year should therefore be read with caution.

Suspects by sex and age · 2025

An identified suspect is not a convicted person.

These are the people the police identified as suspects in their reports. Some will never be prosecuted, and others will be acquitted. For many offences, no suspect is identified.

  • A person is counted once per heading, even if suspected of several offences. The police publish no suspects table for rapes alone: they are included in the sexual offences row.
  • Men and women, minors and adults are shown as published: their sum may differ from the total (unknown sex or age, or different recording from one offence to another).
  • This page shows no nationality data.

What the data do not say

  • Nationality does not mean illegal stay.

The police database records a suspect's nationality, not their residence status. The government confirmed this in the Senate:

« It is not possible, on the basis of the variables available in the BNG [General National Database], to specify whether, within this total, suspects hold a residence permit or are staying in the country illegally. »

Answer from the Minister of Security and Home Affairs, written question 8-121 (Klaas Slootmans), received on 17/04/2025 (our translation) : senate.be

  • Suspect does not mean guilty.

Suspects are identified by the police during the investigation. Only a court establishes guilt, and these figures say nothing about convictions.

  • Most sexual violence is never reported.

According to the national survey UN-MENAMAIS (UGent, ULiège, INCC (Belspo)), 4 % only of the victims surveyed had reported the offence to the police. A rise in recorded offences may therefore also reflect more complaints, not only more violence.

UGent, ULiège, INCC (Belspo), press release of 15/06/2021 (French) : belspo.be

  • A recorded offence is not a victim.

One case may include several offences, and one victim may be involved in several offences. The place is where the offence was committed, not where the victim or suspect lives.
